Science is the knowledge gained from using observations and experiments to describe and explain the world around us. It aims to stimulate our natural curiosity into finding out why things happen in the way that they do.

We run a two key stage three course and a three year key stage four (GCSE) course. Year 9 students undertake a short transition course between the key stages to help them bridge the gap between the key stages and build confidence with some of the fundamental elements of the Science curriculum.


Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

Biology Chemistry Physics
GCSE Linear Biology provides students with a broad and balanced curriculum that develops pupil’s understanding and key skills in a range of Biology topics. Students will study a variety of topics and key ideas:

  1. Cell biology
  2. Organisation
  3. Infection and response
  4. Bioenergetics
  5. Homeostasis and response
  6. Inheritance, variation and evolution
  7. Ecology

In addition, students will develop ‘How Science Works’ skills including;

  1. The development of scientific thinking
  2. Experimental skills and strategies
  3. Analysis and evaluations
  4. Scientific vocabulary, quantities, units, symbols and nomenclature

Students will gain experience of a range of required practical investigations that aim to develop the key skills and complement the subject content studied throughout the course. Students are assessed at the end of the linear course in Year 11 through 2X 1hr 45 min examinations at either Higher tier [HT] or Foundation tire [FT]. Students can achieve 1 – 5 on the FT and 4 – 9 on the HT. A student who just falls short to reach the minimum standard for a grade 4 can be given an allowed grade 3.

  2. Bonding, structure and the properties of matter
  3. Quantitative chemistry

  5. Energy changes
  6. The rate and extent of chemical change
  7. Organic chemistry
  8. Chemical analysis
  9. Chemistry of the atmosphere
  10. Using resources

In addition, students will develop ‘How Science Works’ skills including;
