End of Term Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers

Happy Summer Break and Thanks

Well we have all managed to survive 2021/22, with the ups and downs of
Covid, the flooding of the school, the months it has taken to get the school
back to normal and now the terrible economic circumstances we are all living
through (please see information below about support locally, that is being
offered over the summer to help you).
That said, it has been a fantastic year in school as we have managed to restart
the many clubs, trips and activities that we were so used to before Covid. Here
are some of the great things that have happened this year:

AMEY Engineering – International Women in Engineering Day

Mrs Roberts took 8 year 10 girls to Amey Engineering to take part in a design competition. Students had to design safety features to help pedestrians and cyclists in Liverpool City Centre. They then had to present their ideas to engineers working on the real project. A team from our school won, having the best ideas with the best costing.

John Barnes

Students were lucky enough to be visited by former Liverpool and England player John Barnes in July. Many expected John to be here to talk about his football career, but he came to discuss a much more important topic: racism in society which is a topic that John has explored in his new book. John spoke to students about how we need to question how we view others in society and look beyond a person’s race, gender, religion, class or sexuality. Students were brilliantly behaved and we can’t thank John enough for coming in and bringing attention to such an important topic.

BebFest

This term saw the return of the Academy’s annual music festival, BebFest. Guests were treated to face paint, a raffle, ice cream, sweet stall, bar and pizza & chips whilst eagerly awaiting the evening’s acts to take to the stage. Ranging from heavy metal to pop, all student and staff performers showcased their talents and treated everyone to some very special performances.

IRi Work Experience

Three of our Year 13 Business Studies students (Callum Birch, Jay, Daniel Hurley) entered a competition called Spark, run by the international data management company IRi. The task they were set was to design and market a ready meal. Despite the high volume of entries, our students successfully won the competition and were granted the prize of a week’s work experience in London.

On the Monday 4th of July the students made their way to London via train, accompanied by the Director of Sixth Form Mr Johns. Based at IRi headquarters, they spent two days working independently on a task relating to the impact of government regulation on high fat and sugar foods to retailers, conducting research, collecting data and eventually preparing a presentation to be delivered to board members. They successfully delivered this presentation on Thursday and were congratulated on the level of professionalism and maturity they had shown on the task. As a reward they were treated to a meal in Central London, and a visit to the Shard and The London Eye.

The  week was a valuable experience to all of the students, They saw in detail how this industry operates in a real setting, as well as experiencing the highlights of the capital. All three students have been entered automatically to the final stage of the IRi apprenticeship scheme, with there being a significant chance at least one of them will successfully enter this industry.

Uniform & PE Kit

If you have uniform that your son/daughter has grown out of, we are appealing for it to be donated please. We are all tightening our belts at the moment and any support we can offer via second hand uniform will help our families. Please bring it to Reception and Mrs Mullins will gratefully accept it from you.

Saturday Mechanic Sessions

The Saturday Mechanic Sessions are based around restoring a Suzuki GS500 motorbike and we are working on a couple of Mazda MX5s that have been donated to the programme.

There are a group of students who come in and work on the vehicles. So far we have stripped the first (a terminally rusty) car down to a rolling chassis and totally stripped the motorbike. The second Mazda is slowly having parts swapped from the first car and we are aiming to build one good vehicle from the pair.

We have also sold some components from the first Mazda which has paid for some upgrades to our project.

The students are gaining experience of working in a real workshop environment, they get to use a variety of tools and are hopefully learning techniques to use them effectively.

They also have an aim of raising further money so we can make some more extreme modifications to the car. Every session the students tell me how much we need a turbo for it! If we raise enough money, it might actually happen.

Reminder For Year 10 Who Will Be Year 11

A copy of the letter we sent out is below

As Year 10 draws to a close for your child,  the Year 10 team would like to thank you for your support. The year got off to an unsettled start with the school flood, however it is great to see our students back in full time education for the first time in 3 years.

In only a matter of weeks your child is about to embark into Year 11; arguably the biggest year in their school education so far: the year that will provide them with the springboard to their future ambitions.

In light of this, it is of utmost importance that we do everything we can, to give them the tools to support their successes. When they return to school in September there will only be 26 weeks of education left before exams begin! Therefore, we are holding a Year 11 Launch Day on Monday 5th September 2022. This day will be based around giving the students a firm platform and positive forward momentum to start Year 11.

It will run from 8.30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and will be in 3 main strands:

1 – Working with Elevate Education – Branded as The World’s Leading Study Skills Partner, Elevate Education will run 2 study skills programmes, with one outcome: to equip our students with the skills they need to improve their results. Each workshop is fun, engaging and informative, with practical study skills that are relevant for all pupils and all subjects.

2 – Army Outreach Elite Skills Academy – Providing a hands-on practical workshop based around teamwork, motivation, cooperation and determination- essential skills for students both in an academic setting and beyond. They will also provide a careers presentation to contextualise the  team building workshop within the Army workplace.

3 – Progress Review – Each student will be assigned a member of senior staff with whom to have a 1:1 progress meeting. They will discuss where the students are now and where they need to be by the time exams start. We will take the time to listen to any concerns, discuss potential careers and look at putting strategies in place to maximise students’ chances of progress and success. Students will also have a chance to access career ideas research online to help them with next step choices once Year 11 is complete.

In short, Year 11 term date starts on Monday 5th September 2022, 8.30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Students must be in full school uniform. They are to arrive via the student entrance as normal and meet in the quad, before starting the day from the assembly hall.

Many thanks for your continued support and cooperation. If you have any queries then please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself or Miss Hammond on roxanne.yates@coopacademies.co.ukuk or rebecca.hammond@coopacademies.co.uk

Enjoy the summer break!
