Social Science

Curriculum Intent Statement

At Coop Academy Bebington, we as a department, aim to enable our students to develop a greater awareness and understanding of themselves and other people.  We also want them to gain an awareness of the local and national services that are available to them and others, within the health and social care sector.

We want to equip our students with the knowledge, skills and aspirations to enable them to achieve their full potential in education, life and as a contributor to wider society.   Our curriculum supports the ethos of the school of ‘Shaping Exceptional Futures’.  We aim to provide our students with the tools to enable them to broaden their horizons and encourage aspiration.  Our curriculum encourages students to develop skills of analysis, research and evaluation.  We want our students to develop more complex schemata through the use of thinking hard skills, literacy, numeracy and developing cultural capital.

We aim to deliver learning that is relevant to students with a clear focus on their needs and enable them to apply their learning to the concerns of an individual and to groups within society. Social sciences promote opportunities for students to draw from real life experiences and case studies. We highlight how human relationships, physical environments and socio-economic status may influence how we develop. We encourage independent research to complement learning and create skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.

The social sciences department offers a number of subjects, these include psychology, health and social care, sociology and early years care.

Career opportunities/pathways

Social science courses provide knowledge, understanding and skills for learners to progress to other level 2 qualifications, level 3 vocational qualifications (BTEC Nationals), other academic qualifications (Psychology, Health and Social Care) and to employment.  The courses prepare students who want to work with people, or care for and help others in their future career. We provide the background knowledge and skills needed to work within health and social care professions such as mental health, nursing, midwifery, social work, care assistant, youth worker and occupational therapy.  We have a successful history in giving our students, from all backgrounds, the qualifications they need for further study at university and apprenticeships.
