Curriculum Intent Statement

At Co-op Academy Bebington our high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and provides an opportunity to compete in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We encourage students to compete in sport and participate in physical activity to maintain healthy lifestyle habits for life. The PE curriculum aims to develop students’ social and employability skills through all aspects of Physical Education, in particular Sports Leadership.  

We aim to ensure that all pupils: 

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time 
  • engage in competitive sports and activities 
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Key Stage 3

In KS3 pupils build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their skill development, and apply them across different sports and physical activities.

Students learn what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. Students develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

Our curriculum is broad and balanced meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Pupils are taught to: 

  • Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis] 
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports [for example, athletics, parkour and gymnastics] 
  • Perform dances using advanced dance techniques within a range of dance styles and forms 
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group 
  • Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best 
  • Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Topics covered

  • Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils will study a range of Physical Education activities including; Games (Football/Netball/Rugby/Basketball/Hockey etc.), Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) and Health Related Fitness (HRF). Pupils will complete 2 activities each half term.

Key Stage 4

Key stage 4 students tackle complex and demanding physical activities. Students have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle.

Pupils are taught to: 

  • Use and develop a variety of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis] 
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports, [for example, athletics and gymnastics], or other physical activities [for example, dance] 
  • Take part in further outdoor and adventurous activities in a range of environments which present intellectual and physical challenges and which encourage pupils to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group 
  • Evaluate their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities to achieve their personal best 
  • Continue to take part regularly in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Topics covered

  • Year 10 and 11 will have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle. Including ; Games (Football/Netball/Rugby/Basketball/Hockey etc.), Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) and Health Related Fitness (HRF). Pupils will complete 1 activity each half term.

Options in KS4

  • At KS4 students will learn the main body systems and their functions, develop understanding of the Principles of Training and FITT, explore how physical activities affect the body in the short- and long-term and create a health and fitness programme.
  • NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Fitness
  • In year 10 students will cover Unit 1  – Introduction to Body Systems and Principles of Training in Health and Fitness 
  • In year 11 students will cover Unit 2 – Preparing and Planning for Health and Fitness

Key Stage 5

  • At KS5 students will develop their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, understand what is needed for fitness training and programming for health, sport and well-being, explore a range of fitness tests, develop understanding of sports leadership and how to develop in the sports industry.
  • BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport
  • The course is made up of 4 units, 2 in year 12 and 2 in year 13. In year 12 students will study Anatomy and Physiology, in addition to one optional unit. 
  • In year 13 students will study Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being, in addition to Professional Development in the Sports Industry.
